Abstract
In the spring of 1978, The Central Board of National Antiquities carried out a survey of the damage on paintings and painted and gilded objects in certain Swedish churches (55 churches in Uppland, Småland and Västergötland). The results were even more depressing than the worst fears had anticipated: almost 90 % of all early objects painted on wooden bases were established to be in need of conservation.
