Abstract

Plans for altered use of the historic fortress of Kufstein have necessitated a special investigation programme. In addition to constructive restoration of parts of the walls, problems associated with high humidity problems in the former gun-bunkers of the ‘Josefsburg’, require special investigations, including studying the capillary water up-take characteristics of the wall stones and identification of ventilation deficiencies. Results from these investigations indicate that an automatically controlled ventilation system in combination with a mechanism to raise wall-temperature may help to alleviate problems associated with high humidity and condensation.
