Abstract

In 2004 a working group was established under the framework of the European Committee for Standardisation to develop environmental standards for museums, archives and historic buildings. Its brief was to develop specifications, measurements and methodologies to assist museum professionals to understand and manage environmental factors affecting heritage. This paper summarises the processes of drafting the European standards and explains the rationale behind the documents; it also discusses future approaches to developing European standards.
