Since the 1100 century the church has had a great impact of the Swedish society, but in recent years the number of members has decreased. It is important to invest in energy efficiency to preserve cultural and historical buildings in the organization and reduce maintenance costs. When restoring historical buildings, building conservation is important to take into consideration and the County Board needs to approve all changes of church buildings built before the year of 1940. The purpose of the thesis is to explore methods to preserve old buildings and work with energy efficiency related to the ongoing maintenance. The goal is to work to benefit a liberal church that is open to everyone. The size, location and popularity were other aspects that affected the choice of church. After conducting interviews and literature studies, an operation and maintenance plan was established for Lundby gamla kyrka, which was stated in the 1300 century. The result shows that it is important to align all actions with respect to the conditions of each church. The hope is that some of the methods can be implemented in other churches. During the work, the importance of an updated comprehensive maintenance plan emerged. Energy efficiency and maintenance are important to preserve buildings in a sustainable manner.
