Abstract
Is it possible to refurbish a listed building in terms of energy efficiency without destroying the historical appearance of the building? As part of the EU-funded “3Encult” project, a case study on energy modernization was carried out to investigate this issue. The building examined is a listed building from the 16th century, which is in Freiberg, Saxony. The aim was to reduce energy consumption to almost zero while maintaining the historical building fabric, especially the facade in the Renaissance style. Using diagnostic procedures and simulations, energy-saving potentials were determined and the insulation of the building envelope was planned efficiently. A monitoring system installed in the building provided comparisons between the hygrothermal simulations and the heat and moisture transport processes occurring in the building. By combining technical measures, the energy consumption for heating and hot water was reduced by approximately 95% without any significant impairment of the appearance and the building fabric.
