Abstract

People are much less aware of the humidity of the air than its temperature. We usually only notice when it is particularly humid or when we get static electricity shocks from metal surfaces because the air is dry. Unlike people, many objects are not much affected by temperature but undergo quite dramatic changes as the relative humididty changes. As we shall see, temperature is extremely important in determining the level of relative humidity, and there is a short section towards the end of the chapter about temperature as an agent of deterioration in its own right.
