Abstract

Investigation of the impact of typical heating systems for churches on the building physical behaviour. Simulations and experimentation in situ have been carried out. The study is funded by the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) and the Netherlands Department for Conservation (RDMZ). A popular heating system for the churches in the Netherlands is an "open air" gas infrared heating system, without exhaust air extraction. This study has predicted (by simulation) and demonstrated with experiments the system's dramatic moisture source effect on monumental churches. It also predicts the thermal irradiance effects and the drying of the monumental 16th century wooden pulpit.
