Abstract

The heating energy consumption of historical buildings is usually relatively high due to the poor thermal insulation of their old outside walls. In many cases, the lack of proper thermal protection leads additionally to condensation or mould growth. A supplementary thermal insulation is therefore necessary, both for reasons of energy efficiency and emission reduction, and for the inhabitant’s comfort. In buildings protected as historical monuments, the thermal improvement of the outside walls is in most cases only possible with an inside insulation. The use of capillary active insulation materials allows a construction without a vapour retarder. The article presents the longterm hygrothermal behaviour of the outside wall construction of a half-timbered house in Niedersachsen which was completely renovated with an inside insulation of calcium silicate. The improvement is evaluated and the application limits are explored.
