Church buildings constitute a varied collection of buildings, both in terms of location, age, structures and materials. There is also a great variation in the use and maintenance. This means that there are very different conditions for rot, insect attacks and frost damages in these buildings. In addition, issues such as climate change, indoor air quality and energy conservation become more relevant - issues that previously were not in focus, but is now of crucial importance for the operation and maintenance of churches. Measures to prevent damage and possibly in be able to save energy requires insight in a variety of disciplines. To achieve this, one must both be able to examine and interpret damages. One must know not only the building's technical characteristics, but also take heritage preservation issues in consideration. You have to understand why damages are occurring and what it takes to repair them. Moreover, one must avoid the emergence of new problems, whether by change of climate, or the changes in use. Since the guide focuses on the consequences of climate change, in the form of higher temperatures and more precipitation, the injuries associated with these phenomena are emphasized. The booklet gives a brief introduction to current issues. For a deeper understanding of different issues, one must either search for information in more extensive special literature or consult experts.
