Abstract
The aim with this paper is to see if it is possible to save energy in listed buildings without losing their cultural values. Six listed historic buildings in Visby World Heritage are included in the case study. The study showed that even in one off Visby’s most valuable historic building from the 1400 century were some possibili-ties to save energy without damaging it’s cultural values. In Sweden, listed buildings and other valuable buildings are excepted from the obligation to get energy performance certificates if no cost effective proposed actions can be submitted that does not threaten to damage the building’s cultural values. That historic buildings are excepted from energy certificates sends a signal to the owner that he cannot decrease his energy consumption. This can lead to un-necessary high costs and the building becomes unattractive on the market. The house may perhaps in turn stands unheated which leads to damages in the building.
